Hartwick brings experience in blue line return

Stepping up - Carter Hartwick will be expected to lead offensively and defensively as he dons a Napanee Raiders sweater again this year.

 

You can’t teach experience.

The Napanee Raiders’ blue line will benefit from the addition of Carter Hartwick this year as he’s seen a lot in his young 19 years.

The hometown defenceman already 48 games of PJHL playoff experience, contributing to the Raiders’ Tod Division titles in 2024 and 2025, and he’s also got a Junior A season split between the Navan Grads and Wellington Dukes under his belt. As he starts a post-secondary degree program in commerce at St. Lawrence College, he felt it was time to reacquaint himself with the Best & Bash Arena faithful.

Back in Black – Carter Hartwick will return to the Napanee Raiders blue line after playing at the Junior A level last season.

Hartwick says fans will notice some additional polish in his play.
“The year of Junior A helped me scan the ice and make plays a lot quicker as it is higher paced,” Hartwick said. “I think fans will notice my skating ability has continued to develop in addition to my hockey IQ and leadership skills.”

The past year saw him log two goals and four assists in 13 games with the Ottawa-area Grads before skating in another 24 regular season games and three playoff games with the Dukes.

Coach Ben Hagerman is looking forward to having the rearguard back in the fold.

“We welcome Carter’s return to our blue line with open arms. Having another confident puck mover with experience at higher levels will instantly help our lineup,” Hagerman said. “Carter was a staple in our lineup for two long playoff runs and will be counted on in an increased role this season.”

Hartwick has lofty goals for the season, hoping to compete for another Schmalz Cup. He experienced the team’s last provincial title in 2019 when his father Mike was head coach.

In his 16- and 17-year-old seasons in Napanee, Hartwick played 80 regular season games and contributed 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points. In the playoffs, he had another four goals and 17 assists. 

Off the ice, Hartwick is working for the Town of Greater Napanee full time this summer. He’s an avid golfer and spends time training on and off the ice for the upcoming year.

Hartwick will join his teammates as training camp opens this week, leading up to four preseason games (Aug. 28 in Napanee against Trent Hills, Aug. 29 in Courtice against Clarington, Sept. 3 in Wellington against Picton, and Sept. 4 in Napanee against Picton). The regular season is expected to open Sept. 11.
