Raiders sink Pirates in overtime again

Big efforts - Carter Slaven, right, had his first two PJHL goals in Thursday's 3-2 Raiders win. Zered Haller assisted on both goals.

The Napanee Raiders and Picton Pirates appear to be well matched this season with two games and two overtime decisions. Each time, however, the Raiders were able to secure the extra point with a breakaway goal.

The deciding moment in Thursday’s 3-2 decision came with 2:06 left in the three-on-three stanza.  The Raiders managed to get to the Pirates’ blue line and no further before Tanner Hawkins regrouped toward his own zone.

Sniper – Andrew Carr made no mistake to give the Raiders a 3-2 road win in Picton, scoring with 2:06 remaining in overtime.

He pushed a stretch pass up the left side to Eric Taher, stationed just outside the zone. Taher waited slightly to draw two defenders to him, then sailed a pass straight across the line to Andrew Carr streaking down the right side.  Carr went in alone and beat goaltender Nolan Lane high for the win.

For the overage centre, it would be his fourth goal in the last three games, vaunting him into a tie for the team lead in points with linemate Trent Williams.

Napanee’s earlier offence came from a less expected source as the fourth line stepped in a big way to build a 2-0 lead in the second period.

Carter Slaven scored his first and second PJHL goals on a pair of heavy shots from the slot area.  Zered Haller drew assists on both, while Taher and Owen Lutz also contributed helpers.

The Raiders looked to be in control heading into the third period, but Picton would reply with two goals in short order.  Cole Stephenson had the first as his centring pass from behind the net deflected off Jacob Brown’s pad into the cage.  One minute later, Pirates’ sniper Jacob Gardiner found himself a free path to the net right up the middle and he made no mistake to tie.

Brown was steady on the night, turning aside 37 of 39 Picton shots for the win. Lane had a busier night, stopping 46 of 49.  Neither team could score with a man advantage as each received two opportunities.

Two Raiders made their season debuts Thursday.  Overage rearguard Cole Campbell brought a steadying presence, while new acquisition Mason Goodfellow often drove the play with his speed and he generated several chances off the rush.

Napanee had a rare weekend off before a busy stretch over Thanksgiving.  They’ll host Trent Hills Friday at 7:30, visit Frankford Saturday, and then make their first trek to Lakefield Tuesday.
