Byne bolsters blueline

Signed - Raiders head coach Ben Hagerman welcomes defenceman Kaden Byne to the organization. Last year, Byne skated with an Elgin-Middlesex Canucks team that went to the Telus Cup tournament.

Kaden Byne travelled across Canada to pursue development and championships in his final minor hockey season. Now, he’s ready to star in front of friends and family, signing with the Napanee Raiders.

The 17-year-old Kingston rearguard started 2024-2025 in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League with the Elliott Lake Vikings, but found his season disrupted when the team’s arena closed due to structural concerns.

He landed in Western Ontario with an Elgin-Middlesex Canucks team that ultimately became Ontario Under-18 champions and chased the Telus Cup in Chilliwack, B.C. While there, he also skated in games for the GOJHL Komoka Kings. His racked up 14 points in 22 games with the Canucks.

A strong defender, Byne had his choice of suitors across the province, but he liked what he heard about the Raiders, particularly from close friend Ryan Aldridge. He decided it would help him to find some hockey-life balance and help him to play while taking steps toward a career in the welding trade. He’ll return to La Salle Secondary School this year.

“I chose Napanee so I could stay close to home and play high-level hockey with a good organization,” he said. “My goals for the season are to have a good playoff run and contribute in any way possible.”

Byne sees himself as a good skating puck-moving defenceman who plays a 200-foot game.

“I like to jump up in the offensive play but can also be relied upon in the defensive zone.”

In a season where his club is losing key overage defencemen Erik MacNiel and Alex Case, Raiders head coach Ben Hagerman was enthused to receive a commitment from Byne.

“Kaden is a player that any team at this level or higher levels would be fortunate to have,” Hagerman said. “He is a strong puck mover with a good shot and can help create offence from the back end. His ability to defend will allow him to be counted on in all situations.”

Byne’s level of play at a young age also intrigues his coach.

“The fact that he is only a 2007 birth means that he will be a fan favourite for years to come.”
